Homecoming is one of Santa Monica High School’s major annual traditions, combining a week of school-spirit activities with a pep rally, football game, Homecoming court and dance. In recent years, ASB has organized themed celebrations that may include a carnival, student performances, class competitions and a large all-school dance. The Homecoming court is introduced at the pep rally and voted on by students, with the winners traditionally announced during the football game.

Homecoming was once an even larger civic event at Samohi. Alumni who attended in the 1960s remember it as one of the biggest occasions of the school year, with a community parade in which student clubs built their own floats, along with the rally, game and dance. Although the scale of the celebration changed over time, many traditions survived. One of the most distinctive is the Greenie Run, in which members of the water polo teams paint themselves green and run through the Homecoming rally and football game, a custom that dates back several decades. Homecoming remains one of Samohi’s longest-running expressions of school spirit and student life.
